“It’s 40 years since Arsenal last visited Australia, so we’re delighted to partner with and play in one of the world’s great cities where we have a very strong and loyal Arsenal following,” said Gunners’ legendary manager, Arsene Wenger.
Minister Stuart Ayres said the two Arsenal tour matches were expected to attract more than 28,000 domestic and international visitors, with a total visitor spend of $18.6 million.
“Football fans around Australia and the World can now get these dates in their diary, and book their trip to Sydney’s Stadium Australia for two blockbuster matches,” Mr Ayres said.
“The Arsenal tour has been secured exclusively for Sydney by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, and I can’t wait to welcome Arsenal to our shores in just over 12 months’ time.
“Tickets will go on sale on 19 July 2016, and I encourage all sports fans to come to Sydney and enjoy our great State. Arsenal will be bringing their first team squad, and going head-to-head with our two biggest local sides.”
Arsenal Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gazidis added: “Our pre-season matches enable the squad to complete final preparations ahead of a new campaign, and Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers will provide a strong test for the team.”
