IT looms as the biggest clash in Hyundai A-League history – Western Sydney Wanderers v Sydney FC – in an opening round blockbuster at Stadium Australia on Saturday 8 October.
Tickets to the Wanderers v Sydney FC blockbuster that will kick off the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season go on sale from Noon on Thursday 18 August.
Head here at Noon to secure your seat at the Sydney Derby.
After four seasons of sold out Sydney Derbies at Pirtek Stadium and Sydney Football Stadium, this will be the first ever Sydney Derby to be played at Sydney’s Olympic stadium with its 80,000-seat capacity.
The Round 1 blockbuster is set to smash all attendance records in the league’s 12-year history.
Records will fall
The record for attendance at an A-League match is 55,436, set 10 years ago in the 2006/07 Grand Final at Etihad Stadium between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.
To date, the biggest derby attendance sits with our southern neighbours for the Melbourne Derby in the 2014/15 Semi-Final with a crowd of 50,873.
Derby History
The Wanderers are looking for redemption and will be out in force on and off the pitch with huge numbers of Wanderers fans set to flood into Stadium Australia to prove once and for all that Sydney really is Red & Black.
The Wanderers stated their dominance in their first two seasons in the league, however the recent hotly contested battles have only been separated by a single goal with two draws.
A new venue and a huge crowd in Red & Black will be the catalyst for the Wanderers to assert their dominance following their strong showing the 2015/16 season where they returned to the top of the table, appearing in the Club’s third Grand Final in four seasons as well as returning to the AFC Champions League for the third time.
Wanderers at Sydney Olympic Park
In season 2016/17, the Western Sydney Wanderers will play five major games at Stadium Australia, including a second Sydney Derby on Saturday 18 February. The Wanderers will also play eight matches at neighbouring boutique venue Spotless Stadium, and one Community Round game at Campbelltown Stadium.
Wanderers’ games at Stadium Australia
- Saturday 8 October v Sydney FC (Sydney Derby);
- Saturday 10 December v Melbourne Victory;
- Sunday 1 January v Perth Glory;
- Saturday 18 February v Sydney FC (Sydney Derby);
- Saturday 8 April v Melbourne Victory.
