Rugby Australia and The British & Irish Lions have revealed the full fixture list for one of the largest and most prestigious Rugby events in the world, the 2025 Lions Tour.

The Tour will see the Lions play nine matches in Australia, with three Tests against the Wallabies, and six Tour games around the country – including a match against an invitational team of players from Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide.

The British & Irish Lions combine the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, touring either Australia, New Zealand or South Africa every four years – meaning the Lions only visit Australia every 12 years.

The travelling festival is expected to attract 40,000 international visitors to Australia, who will tour around the country and deliver a strong economic outcome for all the participating cities, states, and territories.

The Lions Tour will be the first of the major Rugby events to visit Australia as part of the golden decade of Rugby; the 2025 Lions Tour will be followed by major Rugby events being hosted in Australia including the 2027 Rugby World Cup for men, the 2029 Rugby World Cup for women, and Rugby Sevens at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Today’s announcement took place in Brisbane, exactly two years before the first Test between the Wallabies and Lions at Suncorp Stadium in the Queensland capital.

The second Test will be at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 26 July, with the final Test match taking place at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 2 August.

The Tour will kick off in Australia on 28 June in Perth, with the Western Force hosting the visitors at Optus Stadium, before the Lions travel to the east coast to take on the Reds at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on 2 July.

The tourists head south the following weekend with clashes against the Waratahs at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on 5 July and the ACT Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra on 9 July. Adelaide Oval will host the final Tour game before the first Test, a marquee match-up between the Lions and an invitational Australia-New Zealand combined team on 12 July in what shapes up to be something of a “fourth Test” on the Tour.

Dead rubber? Please! Why Blues and Maroons don’t play friendlies

Special Report by Matt Cleary

JUST as the concept of a ‘friendly’ does not exist in Australian sport so too are there no ‘dead rubbers’ in a State of Origin rugby league series.

For any player the idea is anathema. Whether one-up, two-down, all square, they play for their State, their people, the jumper and all who’ve worn it. There is nothing dead about an Origin game.

As for friendly? Forget it. They’re anything but friendly. And whatever the status of the series, players tear out for their tribes, one hundred per cent committed.

And when at home, and down 2-0, the desire ratchets up again.

NSW Blues captain James Tedesco faces one of the great challenges of his storied career. Picture: NSWRL.

The current crop of NSW Blues has the added incentive of avoiding a clean sweep and putting a dampener on Queensland’s post-series celebrations.

For Queensland, a sweep would be sweet indeed. Billy Slater‘s team could be just the seventh Origin side to sweep a series in 42 outings.

A Queensland win will mean Slater becomes just the fourth Origin coach after Wayne Pearce, Mal Meninga and Paul Vautin to play in and coach a clean sweep.

Yet NSW will be arguably more motivated.

Nobody within the Blues setup – players, coaches, fans, anyone – wants to go down three-nil in a series.

And running out in front of 80,000 people will be a huge motivator for the home team.

Yet, as in any Origin, pressure’s on.

Under pressure: NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler may be fighting for his Origin career. Pic: NSWRL.

With three series wins in six outings, NSW coach Brad Fittler may need a big win to keep his job after making seven changes to the side that was flogged 32-6 in game two in Brisbane.

One of the new players is Parramatta Eels fullback Clint Gutherson while the consistently excellent Penrith Panthers custodian Dylan Edwards would not have been far away from a call-up.

Both men excel in James Tedesco’s fullback position. As do injured stars Latrell Mitchell and Tom Trbojevic.

Tedesco is a champion, however, and will have a point to prove Wednesday night.

Never, ever, as they say, write off a champion. Picture: Phil Hilyard

Helping him is the Blues’ formidable record at home.

In 30 Origin games at Accor Stadium, NSW has won 19, lost 10 and drawn one.

Of the first 11 games played at Accor Stadium, NSW won 10 including the famous 56-16 game in 2000 when Bryan Fletcher’s post-try ‘hand grenade’ celebrations had Queenslanders seething.

The drawn game was in 2002 when Gorden Tallis ripped off a famous ‘rag-doll’ tackle on Brett Hodgson and 35-year-old Allan Langer returned from England to help square the series and thus retain the State of Origin shield for Queensland. Langer was also named man-of-the-match.

Even during Queensland’s decade of dominance in which they trotted out several of the greatest players of all time and won 10 series in 11 years, NSW still won six games at Accor Stadium to Queensland’s nine. The average margin of victory for either team was 4.8 points.

As ever, Blatchy’s Blues will be a huge presence at the northern end of Accor Stadium. Pic: Ayush Kumar.

On Wednesday night the Blues will take their first steps towards the ground via a tunnel adorned with images of past Blues greats.

They’ll then emerge onto the field to a wall of noise, much of it coming from the 10,000-strong ‘Blatchy’s Blues’ supporters group who’ll nearly fill the the northern end.

Fans will be entertained pre-match by Accor Stadium’s light show which will showcase New Zealand super-group SIX60 who will play a selection of mega-hits including the triple-platinum selling single ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’.

Ampol State of Origin Game 3 will be the first of a trifecta of massive sporting events for Greater Sydney with the Wallabies taking on Argentina at CommBank Stadium on Saturday 15 July before the eyes of world football turn to Accor Stadium when Australia Matildas play Republic of Ireland in the Matildas’ opening game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 on Thursday 20 July.

5:30pm: Gates Open

6:00pm: Kick Off: RISE Academy NSW Blue v NSW Navy

7:30pm: Pre-match Entertainment Commences.

8:05pm: Kick Off: Ampol State of Origin Game III – Westpac Blues versus Something Maroons.

In the space of eight magic days in July, the Stadium will host:

The Westpac NSW Blues v Queensland Maroons in Ampol State of Origin Game 3 as the Blues kick off a new era and try to claw a game back into the Origin series on Wednesday 12 July;

Capacity crowds are expected at both events, bringing thousands of regional, interstate and international visitors to Sydney.

Ampol State of Origin Game 3

While the Westpac NSW Blues will be chasing their first win of the Ampol State of Origin series, demand for tickets to Origin 3 in Sydney remains high.

NSW fans can be expected to turn Sydney Olympic Park into a Blues fortress come July 12.

The Blues will field a much changed lineup with returning faces Cody Walker, Jake Trbojevic, Reagan Campbell-Gillard & Jacob Safiti coming into the side along with debutants Bradman Best and Keaon Kolamatangi who will need the support of the Blatchys Blues crowd if they are to take down the Queensland Maroons.

King’s Birthday Bash: Bulldogs and Eels to contest second annual I4Give Cup

By Matt Cleary

CANTERBURY Bulldogs and Parramatta Eels will contest the second annual I4Give Cup at Accor Stadium on Monday, a match which also marks the NRL’s first King’s Birthday long weekend fixture.

Played in honour of the Abdallah Family, who continue to spread a message of forgiveness after losing three children and their niece in a car accident in Oatlands in 2020, the I4Give Cup is an initiative between the Bulldogs, Eels and the I4Give Foundation.

I4Give founder, father and Bulldogs fan Danny Abdallah spoke to Canterbury players on Thursday and will present the I4Give Cup to the winning captain on Monday.

Last year was a big one for Mr Abdallah and his wife Leila who addressed the World Meeting of Families at The Vatican in Rome, joined Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at at Westminster Abbey for the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and presented the I4Give Cup to Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson following the Dogs’ shock 34-4 win over Parramatta at Accor Stadium.

Storylines abound for Monday’s match, which kicks off at 4pm.

A big game up front against Eels enforcers Junior Paulo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard should secure Tevita Pangai Jnr‘s position in the Blues team ahead of State of Origin game two in Brisbane.

With Blues halfback Nathan Cleary injured, Bulldogs captain Matt Burton and Eels ace Mitchell Moses could play their way into NSW coach Brad Fittler’s notebook.

Another looking to cement his spot in Fittler’s little blue book is Bulldogs flier Josh Addo-Carr. ‘The Foxx’ has scored 21 tries in 18 games at Accor Stadium including a hat-trick in last year’s I4Give Cup.

Yet Addo-Carr faces a significant hurdle given he’s named to line up against Eels powerhouse Maika Sivo, the blockbusting Fijian who has scored 45 tries in his last 50 games.

Josh Addo-Carr celebrates another try at Accor Stadium. Pic: Ayush Kumar.

On a lighter note and given the royal theme, live-wire Eels captain Clint Gutherson will be well aware of the public holiday’s significance given some years ago he proclaimed himself ‘King Gutho’.

The Eels have won eight of their last 10 games against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.

The Dogs are coming off a tight, one-point loss to the Roosters while the Eels will be refreshed following a bye.

Both teams sit outside the Top-8 and will be desperate to keep themselves in the 2023 premiership hunt.

Key Times:

1:25pm: Gates open

1:40pm: Knock-on Effect NSW Cup – Bulldogs v Eels

4:00pm: NRL Telstra Premiership – Bulldogs v Eels

They will tour Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane in November/December 2023, followed by Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in January 2024.

Don’t miss the one and only Foo Fighters . . .  returning to Accor Stadium this summer!

Released last Friday, Foo Fighters’ 11th studio album But Here We Are is out now on Roswell Records/RCA Records. Featuring ‘Rescued’, ‘Under You’, ‘Show Me How’, and ‘The Teacher’, the 10-track album was produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, and has been already been met with waves of critical acclaim hailing it as one of the best in the vaunted Foo Fighters catalogue.

Sonically channelling the naiveté of the band’s 1995 debut, informed by decades of maturity and depth, But Here We Are is the sound of brothers finding refuge in the music that brought them together in the first place 28 years ago, a process that was as therapeutic as it was about a continuation of life.

Foo Fighters returned to the stage two weeks ago to kick off their current world tour, which includes headline sets at festivals Boston Calling, Sonic Temple, Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Riot Fest, and more. In addition to the live debut of songs from But Here We Are, fans can of course expect the kind of setlists which have made Foo Fighters one of the biggest live draws on the worldwide stadium, arena and festival circuit:  ‘The Pretender’‘Breakout’‘This Is a Call’‘My Hero’‘All My Life’‘Everlong’‘The Sky Is A Neighborhood’‘Learn To Fly’‘Best Of You’‘Monkey Wrench’‘Times Like These’‘Walk’ and more.

Foo Fighters will also perform in Japan, Brazil and Abu Dhabi in 2023, before heading Down Under.

Joining Foo Fighters as special guests, Queensland punkers The Chats conquered the globe in 2017 with ‘Smoko’ then hit #1 with LP Get F**cked.

Considered one of the world’s greatest post-millennial punk-rock group, they’ll be match-fit by November following a 28-date US tour in October.

Also appearing as special guests will be Manchester duo Hot Milk who released their debut album A Call To The Void in August, in between northern hemisphere sets at festivals Download, Lollapalooza, Reading, and more.

Promoters One World Entertainment, TEG Live and Pure Gold today announced that the rock legends and kiss-tory-making gods will turn it on one last time in the way that KISS only can – and only in Sydney.

Photo: Keith Leroux

The Final Curtain show was initiated via a national petition, with passionate KISS fans pleading for the band to return to play one more show in Australia before they bring their incredible touring career to an end with their final-ever performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City on 2 December 2023.

KISS frontman Paul Stanley said: “Australia you have made your voices loud enough that it was impossible for us not to hear you! We are overwhelmed by your petitions and calls for one last KISS so we are now announcing that The End Of The Road will detour one last time to Sydney for a final bombastic farewell. As unexpected as this is for us, we will make it unforgettable for all who share the night with us.”

TEG Group CEO Geoff Jones said “TEG is incredibly excited to be able to bring this iconic and legendary band back to Australia for one last time.  As the only country to receive an additional last-ever show, it speaks to the power of the band’s passionate Australian fan base and TEG’s commitment to delivering the shows that fans demand. This final exclusive stadium show at Accor Stadium is sure to be a monumental goodbye for KISS fans from across Australia.”

One World Entertainment CEO Andrew McManus hinted that fans may see a concert for the ages at Accor Stadium on Saturday 7 October.

“My journey of over 22 years with KISS continues for one, final, huge and explosive event, I can’t call it a concert as this is going to be so much more,” he said.

“Now adding WEEZER as ‘special guests’, I’m proud to continue my partnership with the great folks at TEG and deliver what will be The Final Curtain and Goodbye which promises to have a few amazing surprises.

“All I can say is . . . don’t miss the final bow!”

KISSteria well and truly took over Australia in 1980 after their first-ever tour here, resulting in a deep & lasting connection between the band and their fans.  The sold-out Unmasked Tour broke all kinds of records.  Four decades on, KISS has continued their love affair with Australia, whilst gaining new fans across multiple generations along the way.

The sold-out End of the Road tour in November last year received blistering reviews and proved, yet again, why KISS are the most iconic live show in the world.

It’s only fitting that they perform their final ever Australian show at Accor Stadium – the home of Sydney’s major events. It will be bigger, louder, hotter, and crazier than ever before.

Come and celebrate THE FINAL CURTAIN with the hottest band that gave rock ‘n roll to us!

Call for nominations to recognise female sporting legend at Accor Stadium

Thursday 20 April 2023

The NSW Government is putting out the call to recognise and celebrate Australia’s greatest female athletes at Accor Stadium.

The people of NSW will help decide who is honoured in Accor Stadium’s eastern grandstand by nominating a female sporting legend through the NSW Government’s Have Your Say page.

The eastern grandstand is the main public seating area of the stadium and closest to the major public transport links to Sydney Olympic Park.

The public’s nominations will be assessed by a college of judges drawn from the sport, government and media industries, before a recommendation is made to the NSW Government.

The process will be managed by Venues NSW, which in January unveiled a sculpture of a female cricket legend Belinda Clark at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the first such recognition of a female cricketer in the world.

Once the immediate Accor Stadium project is complete, Venues NSW will continue to implement its athlete recognition program in the five sporting precincts, six stadiums and two entertainment centres it manages in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “Celebrating Australia’s greatest female athletes was one of our election commitments that I am proud we can take swift action on.

“I want to encourage everyone to jump online and have their say.

“It could be a vote for Louise Sauvage or Cathy Freeman and their amazing success at Sydney 2000, or the more modern stars whose excellence has driven elite women’s sport into the mainstream.

“There are so many amazing female athletes who are deserving of this honour and the timing is perfect when NSW hosts the Matilda’s first match at the biggest sporting event in the world this year, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023TM.”

Minister for Women Jodie Harrison said: “This will be hugely important recognition for women in sport in Australia, and for girls who are looking to emulate their sporting heroines.

“These female athletes make the same sacrifices and put in the same incredible effort as men and deserve to be just as widely celebrated.

“We have front row seats to the rise of an exciting new era in women’s sport and it’s important that we recognise the female legends who made this possible.”

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said: “This will be just the first major recognition program at Accor Stadium, where we have seen some of world sport’s greatest moments.

“We have sculptures of Belinda Clark, Marlene Matthews and Betty Cuthbert at Moore Park, please help us decide which female sporting legend is worthy of a similar honour at Accor Stadium, NSW’s home of major events.”

Nominations can be made at www.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say from Thursday 20 April to Thursday 18 May 2023.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Kicks Off In 100 Days and Tickets Are Back On Sale!

In just 100 days, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™ will commence with opening games being played in both Australia and New Zealand.

Accor Stadium, which will revert to generic name Stadium Australia for the duration of the tournament, will host the CommBank Matildas’ opening night game against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday 20 July.

The Stadium will also host one game in each of the knockout-stage rounds including a Round of 16 match, a Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final 2023™ on Sunday 20 August.

With today marking 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, single match passes are back on sale at fifa.com/tickets

To mark the 100-day milestone, Football Australia has unveiled an impressive mosaic to commemorate a multitude of significant moments and contributions since the inception of the bold and forward-thinking Legacy ’23 plan.

Football Australia’s mosaic to commemorate the Legacy ’23 plan

The year 2023 is poised to be the most thrilling in Australian football history, with the CommBank Matildas ranked Australia’s fourth most favoured national team (source Futures Sport and Entertainment Brand Health Report December 2022) and rising participation numbers, promising a bright future for our game.

With just 100 days to go until the world unites on our shores for the largest standalone event in women’s sport, there are many achievements to celebrate in the advancement of women’s football in Australia (as represented in the mosaic) and at the same time, an opportunity to reflect on what remains to be carried out.

Since its launch in February 2021, the Legacy ’23 Plan has been instrumental in securing Federal and State funding across the five pillars for Football Australia. Notably, 79 per cent of this has been attributed to the development of elite and tournament infrastructure necessary to make the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ possible.

Despite some progress, FA says it is crucial that the nation addresses much needed improvement in community grassroots facilities. Currently, only 40 per cent of football facilities nationwide are classified as female-friendly, and the figures are even more alarming in NSW, where the number drops to 24 per cent .

Federal Minister for Sport, Anika Wells said: “In 100 days, this World Cup will change lives . . . not just for players, but for fans captivated in stadiums and for the children watching on believing they too can be great.

“The FIFA Women’s World CupTM is crucial to providing opportunities to increase football and sport participation by women and girls and we must work together to ensure this becomes reality. The Government has provided significant financial, operational and policy support to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ to help promote cultural change through sport and ensure the tournament leaves a positive legacy for decades.”

Football Australia CEO, James Johnson said: “Our Legacy ‘23 Plan has laid the groundwork for Football Australia to leverage the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023TM and to revolutionise the future of women’s football and the way in which women and girls across the country participate in sport.

“As we strive to become Australia’s first community sport to reach gender parity, we will continue to work collaboratively with Federal and State Governments, and our commercial partners to capitalise on the growth this event will bring to our game and to unlock further opportunities to support the country’s largest club-based participation sport.”
