THE most capped Socceroo of all time, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is the latest football star to join the global effort to raise money for the communities devastated during the recent bushfire crisis.
Schwarzer was capped 109 times for the Socceroos. He made his debut in 1993, represented Australia at two FIFA World Cups and played in 5 World Cup qualifying campaigns – including saving two penalties in the unforgettable qualifier against Uruguay at Stadium Australia in 2005.
And whilst fellow #FootballForFires team-mate John Aloisi stole most of the accolades for his penalty in the 2005 shoot-out for Australia against Uruguay, the former Marconi gloveman played a massive part in helping Australia reach its first FIFA World Cup in 32 years that night by saving two penalties in the same shoot-out.
“It’s a night I will never forget, and I can’t wait to get back on that same pitch in May for what will be a very special evening,” he said.
“Perhaps Johnny and I can change role if there’s a penalty shoot-out at the end, and we’ll see just how good he is between the sticks!”
“It’s amazing to see the support from all corners of the globe and I can’t wait to see the thousands of volunteer firefighters and emergency services personnel who will be there. I encourage football fans to come along for what should be a very special evening,” he said.
