ARSENAL legend Sol Campbell today spoke of the excitement in the club and among fans as he officially launched the 100-day countdown to the Gunners’ Arsenal In Sydney Tour this July.
Standing on the northern broadwalk of the famous Sydney Opera House, Campbell said it was an honour to be in Sydney on behalf of Arsenal and building up the excitement ahead of the team’s tour.
“It’s an honour to be here in Sydney on behalf of Arsenal. I know there are passionate fans heading to Sydney’s Stadium Australia for the two Arsenal games from all over Australia, and indeed from overseas as well . . . and we are now counting down the days to the tour,” Campbell said.
“I’m really excited to be visiting Sydney. I’ve never been to the city, or indeed Australia, before, and I’m looking forward to meeting the people and seeing the landscape which looks beautiful from everything I’ve seen.”
Campbell was joined at the Opera House for the launch by NSW Minister for Tourism & Major Events, Adam Marshall, and star Australian A-League player Bobo (Sydney FC).
Minister Adam Marshall welcomed Sol Campbell’s visit and said Arsenal’s tour of Sydney was a major win for football fans.
“The NSW Government is proud of its continued success in attracting major events to the State and securing the visit of global football power Arsenal to Sydney will continue to showcase our major events capabilities to the world and help us drive economic growth,” Mr Marshall said.
Sydney FC’s marquee player, Brazilian striker Bobo, said: “Having one of world football’s leading clubs coming down under to play Sydney FC is a fantastic opportunity.
“This game allows us to showcase our potential on the world stage, as well as giving our younger boys a valuable learning experience.”
Western Sydney Wanderers’ star Terry Antonis said of the upcoming game against the red and black: “I’ve watched the great Arsenal teams play in the Premier League over the years and to see this massive Club play in Australia for the first time in 40 years – and against the Western Sydney Wanderers on a Saturday night – will be huge.”
Sol Campbell is known as an Arsenal “Invincible”. In a celebrated career at the Gunners, he won six major trophies with the club, and he was a cornerstone player of the side that went an entire Premier League season unbeaten in 2003/04.
While in Sydney this week he will be promoting the upcoming Arsenal tour while interacting with Aussie Arsenal fans and exploring the city.
Arsenal will play back-to-back blockbusters at Stadium Australia against Sydney FC on Thursday 13 July and Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 15 July.
The 100-day countdown coincides with the FINAL TICKET RELEASE for both games today. Tickets are still available across all categories for the two games, with prices starting from just $39.
